SEARCH FOR MT TONGUE
Sujata Bhatt
You ask me what I mean
by saying I have lost my tongue.
I ask you, what would you do
if you had two tongues in your mouth,
and lost the first one, the mother tongue,
and could not really know the other,
the foreign tongue.
You could not use them both together
even if you thought that way.
And if you lived in a place you had to
speak a foreign tongue,
your mother tongue would rot,
rot and die in your mouth
until you had to spit it out.
I thought I spit it out
but overnight while I dream,
(munay hutoo
kay aakhee jeebh aakhee bhasha)
(may thoonky nakhi chay)
(parantoo rattray svupnama mari bhasha pachi
aavay chay)
(foolnee jaim mari bhasha nmari jeebh)
(modhama kheelay chay)
(fullnee jaim mari bhasha mari jeebh)
(modhama pakay chay)
grows longer, grows moist, grows strong veins,
it ties the other tongue in knots,
the bud opens, the bud opens in my mouth,
it pushes the other tongue aside.
Everytime I think I've forgotten,
I think I've lost the mother tongue,
it blossoms out of my mouth.
This poem has 3 parts. first one is that What does the author think about having 2 tongues and her mother tongue. Second part is unique a bit. there are no English in this part. A last part was translated from the worlds above.
I like this poem because I think author use this style because she wanted to tell that our mother tongue will be never forgotten even you think you forget or try to lost it. This is why did the author write the original and translate, she wanted to emphasis original. Also there is a lot of skills. For example, metaphor on the line 12 and 13 there is "your mother language would rot, rot and die in your mouth. " Usually people use rot for plant. However In this part it is metaphorical state of tongue. And there is one more skill in these lines. This is why author separate in 2 lines. As you know from the poem above there are 2 "rots" and the sentence separate in between of
them. Finally I found one more skill it is at the last section of this poem. there are 4 sentences that start with "it" and also grows are used 3 times. These makes rhythm.
